What explains the sorry state of airline travel in the United States? Largely, it is story of government retreating from its historical role in structuring competition in airline markets, combined with a near wholesale abandonment of anti-trust enforcement. They are now exceeded their unpopularity only by health insurance companies and Internet service providers. No wonder that in surveys of consumer satisfaction, the dominant airlines in the United States score abysmally. Adding insult to injury, the industry’s profitability recently hit an all-time high, reaching $20 billion in 2016. An analysis of government data by the Wall Street Journal shows that not only has service to all but the largest airports fallen dramatically over the last decade, the already high cost of flying to most mid-size and smaller locations has increased faster than inflation. While the number of departures at large hub airports declined 6.2 percent between 20, the decline at small and non-hub airports was 31.5 percent, or five times as great. Meanwhile, more and more cities and even whole regions of “fly over America” are finding they are served by fewer and fewer flights costing more and more. These amplify long simmering resentments over such routine indignities as “involuntary denied boardings,” late and canceled flight, mishandled baggage, bruised knees, and ever more add-on charges. Viral videos showing passengers being manhandled or pushed to the ground and left unconscious by airline employees become the talk of the nation. Complaints about the decline of airline service have now become a commonplace of American life. AVEVA Instrumentation‚Äôs openness now allows us to offer this visual engineering capability directly to customers through a totally seamless and well proven service.‚ÄùAVEVA has recently published an instrumentation whitepaper, entitled Top Ten Instrumentation Headaches, which examines the daily challenges facing instrumentation engineers and designers. EpiSES can now provide this cost-effective service directly to the industry.‚ÄùHendrik van Leeuwen, CEO of EpiSES, said: ‚ÄúAs project complexity grows and schedules compress, visual engineering is the only sensible option for both delivering and repurposing instrumentation design reliably. This is why we have experienced very strong demand from SPI/INtools users for an easy migration route into AVEVA Instrumentation. Slow, costly data entry across multiple applications is out integrated visual engineering is the answer. One recent project involved nearly 80,000 separate items of instrumentation data migrated from SPI/Intools to AVEVA Instrumentation in just two weeks.Dave Gibson, Head of Product Strategy for Instrumentation and Electrical Systems for AVEVA said: ‚ÄúThere is mounting economic pressure on instrumentation and control engineers to produce and repurpose their designs more rapidly than ever before, and to get it right the first time. EpiSES has already successfully delivered migration services for several companies. Instead, the wiring is simply moved to its new route by ‚Äòdrag and drop.‚Äô All associated connections, terminations and other data are managed automatically. Rerouting wiring, for example, is no longer a multi-stage data entry process with many opportunities for error. SeptemAVEVA announced a migration capability for process plant businesses to upgrade entire instrumentation and control design systems from Smart Plant Instrumentation (SPI/INtools) to AVEVA Instrumentation technology. The upgrade and migration service itself is provided by The EpiSES Group, an engineering organisation that offers integration solutions, consultancy and training for Plant Owners, EPCs, subcontractors and Construction & Commissioning support teams. With AVEVA Instrumentation, companies have the ability to create and manage instrument data through simple, graphical interfaces, rather than error-prone tables and forms, and to apply intelligent change management. Path enables process plants to upgrade entire instrumentation and control design systems from Smart Plant Instrumentation (SPI/INtools) to AVEVA's Instrumentation technology. While many cite Season 4 as a favorite, Breaking Bad's final season (split into eight episodes separated by a year in between) is remembered for many of its more engrossing and, ultimately, heartbreaking moments. However, when he heads home to retrieve the money from the crawl space underneath his house, he discovers Skyler took it to pay off her laundering former lover's debt to the IRS, inciting a startling bout of mania portrayed exquisitely by Bryan Cranston and resulting in one of the series' most breathtaking final shots. Walt enlists Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk) to help him relocate his family, which will require an immodest payment. When Gus catches word that Hank has come dangerously close to uncovering his operation with Walt's reluctant help, he severs ties with the cook completely, but not without threatening to kill his wife, his son, and his infant daughter before his exit. The tension comes to a world-shattering climax and Walt reaches the peak of his desperation in the season's eleventh episode. When we first see Walt in his classroom describing chemistry as "a study of change," he is unwittingly referring to the metamorphosis he is destined to undergo.Įveryone has a favorite season of Breaking Bad, but the majority seem to favor Season 4, particularly for the meticulously winding tension between Walt and his ruthless employer Gus Fring. It perfectly familiarizes us with the protagonist, quickly ropes the audience in with its bewildering flash-forward cold open, and drops subtle hints to the show's overarching theme. The premiere episode of Breaking Bad is one of the more expertly constructed introductions to a series. When he receives news that he has terminal lung cancer, he makes the decision to team up with his former student, Jesse Pinkman, to start a methamphetamine operation to be able to support his family once he succumbs to his diagnosis, but he soon discovers this new profession may be more life-threatening. In the episode that started it all, we meet Bryan Cranston’s Walter White, a high school chemistry teacher (and part-time car wash attendant) with a loving family that is about to add a fourth member, who still seems somewhat unfulfilled. While this threatening turn is clearly a performance, it is one convincing enough for even viewers to shed their pre-conceived notions of Walter White’s true nature. After Jesse’s first meeting with the drug slinger puts him in the hospital, a freshly head-shaven Walt pays Tuco a visit to lay out his own terms of negotiation, which include “a tweak in the chemistry” that proves to be literally explosive. Some might say the switch was flipped by the third or fourth year, but I would say we get our first inkling of who he is destined to become in the premiere season.Īfter deciding to continue his business agreement with Jesse, Walt becomes desperate for better funds and has his partner seek help with distribution from Tuco Salamanca (Raymond Cruz), who turns out to be a hostile negotiator, to put it lightly. It is debatable which point in Breaking Bad’s narrative marks the exact moment that Walter White’s transition into a ruthless criminal mastermind really begins to kick into gear. Crazy Handful Of Nothin’ - Season 1, Episode 6 Yet, the episode’s true strengths lie in how it paints Gus as a villain threatening enough to convince a man his life depends on an issue as seemingly frivolous as a housefly.ĩ. This forces him and partner Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul) to spend and entire workday hunting down the “contamination,” complemented by a witty, one-sided debate on the correct spelling of “possum” (or “opossum”) and Walt’s reflection on how his criminal lifestyle rivals the value of his life. In the series’ sole bottle episode, and the first directed by Rian Johnson, Walter White discovers the titular insect inside the meth lab provided to him by Gus Fring (Giancarlo Esposito). Yet, it has made this particular Top 10 list because, quite frankly, I believe it deserves more recognition than it has received. That may not sound too bad, but compared to the ratings of more widely acclaimed episodes, it is quite a dip. If you look at the top-rated episodes of Breaking Bad on IMDb, at the very bottom of the list, ranked at #62, is “Fly” with an average user score of 7.8. It might take a bit of getting used to for complete novices, but after a matter of minutes it feels incredibly natural. Basic movement and camera control is assigned to the left and right sticks, respectively, while a canny combination of D-pad and shoulder buttons allows you to, for example, order individual team movements, and actions (fire at will, stand down, hold position) as well as enable you to play swapsies with your often ludicrously large inventory. Bradley, the team leader, is an all rounder and carries the Laser Designator to call in air strikes at predetermined points, Foley is the Sniper of the team, Conners is your Heavy Weapons specialist, while Jones is the Infiltration and Demolitions expert.Īs we touched on before, the controls are incredibly slick, allowing you to switch between characters, manage your inventory and issue orders with ease. Your squad is comprised of the same battle grizzled soldiers as before, and each member has his specialist area. You get to control a four man SAS or Delta Force squad around various Iraqi/Kuwaiti environments (based in early 1991) using whatever tactics suit the situation, be they stealth or all out aggression. A more honest, realistic assessment would be to treat this as a mission pack, and for those who do just want more of the same, you'll come away a satisfied customer.įor those of you who didn't play the original, here's the deal. Yes, it's more of the same - an 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' approach to a sequel and a fine exercise in maximizing the game's sales opportunities as quickly as possible.įor those expecting massive advancements or a radical departure from the original, this will come as a disappointment. The truth is, virtually nothing's changed beyond a handful of new weapons, slightly enhanced graphics/animation and an improved mission briefing system. It wasn't perfect, however, sporting a tired-looking graphics engine full of draw distance issues and blurry textures that conspired to dampen initial enthusiasm.Īlmost exactly a year after the release of the original, you'll doubtlessly be wondering what facets of the game Pivotal has improved in just 12 months. But, most importantly, Conflict: Desert Storm essentially won the hearts of gamers with a series of tense missions and an inspired console-based control system that mapped a multitude of commands to the joypad, somehow turning what could've been a nightmare experience into one of the better titles of 2002. What it did have on its side was great/bad timing to ensure maximum marketing appeal, and the ability to shoot endless Iraqis in desert-based combat. More equipment, weapons, and vehicle options are available to help players attain their goals.Ĭonflict: Desert Storm was a resounding triumph for Brit duo Pivotal Games and its publisher SCi, displaying ample proof that squad based shooters needn't be the preserve of the PC, and scored a transatlantic hit with a title that neither sported a flashy license, nor a big budget. Players can freely switch between squad mates as well as issue orders for the team to follow. Each SAS and Delta Force squad consists of a team leader, combat engineer, sniper, and heavy weapons specialist. Players will once again need to balance the need for action against the need for survival in a series of 10 missions designed to fulfill operation objectives.īack to Baghdad takes players further into Kuwait as they try to neutralize scud missile installations, prevent the use of chemical weapons, free prisoners of war, and oust Hussein's Republican Guard from their entrenched position within Kuwait City. Players must lead a squad of soldiers charged with the task of defending Kuwait against the Iraqi invasion. The game's focus is on the SAS and Delta Force teams operating in and around Iraq during the time of the Gulf War. Conflict: Desert Storm II - Back to Baghdad is set one year after the events introduced in 2002's Conflict: Desert Storm. In 2016, a slew of A-list actors remade the song for the film Trolls. But they’re at least cover-adjacent, so we’ll start there. They’ll be in a better position to fight disciplinary rulings and make possible changes to any playing rules and conditions they may find unsuitable.Ī players’ union has to be the way to go and it doesn’t make sense to me why they don’t have one.The three most prominent “Mo Money Mo Problems” covers aren’t really covers at all. I’m not saying the PRTA is in a position to pay those appearance fees to our road tennis players, but they sure as hell won’t find out without a union. That’s why I was so surprised when none of the others banded with Daniel over his previous demands for appearance fees.Īfter all, international tennis tournaments do such for Roger Federer. Just one night later at that same venue two women’s drew less than two-thirds of the previous crowd. No one is denying that the PRTA has given these players more prize money than they’re accustomed to getting, but without a bargaining agreement the players won’t always know how much money these tournaments are bringing in.ĭo you think Massy United Insurance would enter a sponsorship agreement with the PRTA of $120 000 over three years if the Clash Of The Titans didn’t feature Barbados’ best road tennis players?Īnd just in case you still don’t think they are entitled to a share in profits then just take a look at the crowd numbers when certain big names aren’t on court.Īntonio “Lil Man” Daniel and Julian “Michael Jackson” White once played on the same night in the preliminaries of the Monarchs Of The Court and that led to a full house at the Cable Wireless courts in Wildey. That is also something that needs addressing by a players’ union. On the flip side, though, Lynch can argue his branded clothing doesn’t directly compete with Clarke’s insurance sponsors.Ī lower-level player like Lynch also needs to find a way to generate money considering he won’t ever appear in the money rounds while there is no current revenue split of the sponsorship. Yes, Clarke needs to guard the interests of his sponsors, who have paid top dollar for exclusive mileage and the protection from ambush marketing. Yet players like Lynch would have a case if a body was representing him over this issue where he was banned for wearing his own sponsored gear during warm-ups. Oddly enough international tennis, the direct relative of road tennis in my mind, doesn’t have a players’ union, although the ATP and WTA are supposed to represent the players despite the clear conflict of interest. So they make sure they’re entitled to a particular share of revenue and playing conditions that are suitable for them due to their earning power.īut that doesn’t currently happen within the PRTA. The NFL isn’t a multi-billion dollar industry minus Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers, Antonio Brown and Richard Sherman. The NBA can’t thrive without stars like LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Stephen Curry and James Harden. That’s because the players are the ones who are the real money earners. Just look at professional leagues like the NBA and the NFL, who have high-profiled unions that enter in collective bargaining agreements with those associations to protect the players’ interests. However, it’s also the players’ right to form a bargaining body to address their issues because let’s face it without them Clarke can’t make those profits. I don’t think CEO Dale Clarke would ever deny that his PRTA is a money-making entity which attracts major sponsorship for profit. It’s just another area that shows me we don’t really understand pro sports because we want to bring amateur behaviours to a professional setup. I think both Dwayne Lynch and Rachel Smith are finding this out the hard way after being forced to watch this Massy United Clash Of The Titans from the sidelines without anyone to represent their causes.ĭon’t get me wrong, I’m not suggesting the Professional Road Tennis Association (PRTA) is wrong, or even right, for banning the duo over not wearing the given sponsored clothing on court.īut without a union then these players will always be subject to the whims and fancies of the PRTA with regard to whatever rules or decisions they make. Well, road tennis has shown me otherwise.Īnd clearly the biggest problem right now is the absence of a players’ association. I mean, shouldn’t money solve problems and not create them? A LOT of things didn’t make sense to me as a 16-year-old in 1997, like Biggie Small’s Mo’ Money Mo’ Problems. For more than 40 years, organizations of all types have relied on IBM SPSS.
